Treatment for Bleeding Gums

What is gum disease?

Gum disease is a condition where bacteria from calculus buildup on the teeth infect the gum tissue, causing them to become inflamed and pull away from the teeth. In the first stage of gum disease, gingivitis, gums appear red and swollen and bleed easily when you brush and floss. At the first signs of gum disease, you should contact us right away to receive gum disease treatment in Plantation, FL. Gum disease does not resolve on its own and, in fact, will continue to progress and worsen until your gums and bone are irreversibly damaged. In its most advanced stage, the possibility for tooth loss is great and your systemic health (and conditions like diabetes and heart disease) will be aggravated by the presence of chronic infection. Don’t let this be your situation!

Our specialized Services

Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and root planing is a non-surgical first step of gum disease treatment. It’s a more thorough cleaning of your teeth at and below the gumline. Scaling removes the plaque and tartar stuck to the surfaces of the teeth to help reduce the presence of bacteria. Root planing smooths the tooth surface to discourage bacteria accumulation in the future. We may also treat the pockets around the teeth with antibiotics.

Gingivectomy

If the periodontal pockets do not heal after scaling and root planing treatment and gum disease continues to progress, we will perform a gingivectomy. During this surgery, we remove diseased tissue and reshape healthy gums to reduce pocket depth around the teeth. A gingivectomy can keep gum disease from progressing and harming your bone.

Periodontal Maintenance

To keep gum disease from progressing after treatment, we provide periodontal maintenance appointments every 3-4 months. They consist of scaling the teeth to remove calculus buildup on the roots and in the pockets, then eliminating bacterial with root planing and antibiotics. We may also take x-rays to monitor the health of your bone.
